PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER SOLVENT-BASED FIRE RETARDANT PAINT

Solvent-based fire retardant paint is an oil-based paint used to protect construction as well as industrial buildings, steel structures to minimize damage when a fire incident occurs. Under the impact of high temperatures above 250oC, the flame retardant paint film will start to occur complex chemical reactions and will swell to form a honeycomb-shaped porous layer,

This layer of porous coal has about 30 times thicker than the original flame retardant coating thickness, with good insulation and protection for steel structures, buildings, buildings at a temperature of 1000-1100oC for about 120 minutes or more (depending on the thickness of the flame retardant coating). SCC blistering is based on a passive flame retardant mechanism, prolonging the fire resistance time, limiting the generation of more smoke during the fire, protecting steel structures for a longer time when a fire occurs, and loss of people and wealth.

Process of applying Solvent-based fire retardant paint

Step 1: Clean the surface of the template, handle grease, dirt, and rust stains to enhance the paint's adhesion to the surface.

Step 2: Apply primer (Alkyd primer or Epoxy primer)

Step 3: After the primer layer has dried, apply fire retardant paint.

Step 4: After the flame retardant paint layer has dried, we proceed to apply the coating (Alkyd, Epoxy, or PU paint)

Depending on the fire resistance standard applied to each specific building, one will select and apply a fire retardant coating with the appropriate thickness to ensure the fireproof quality for that project:

+ 90-minute fire retardant paint: Fire retardant coating thickness of 500 µm

+ 120-minutes fire retardant paint: Fire retardant coating thickness of 600 µm

Below are the results of the solvent-based fire retardant paint test developed by Megarad Experimental Research Center with a LiG-S1 gas furnace. After 120 minutes of burning, the furnace temperature reached 1031oC, fire retardant paint with a thickness of 600µm had a layer of porous coal about 1.7cm, the average temperature on the back of the specimen reached 334 oC.

Mega Experimental Research Center has completed a set of solvent-based flame retardant paint formulas that meet customers' actual requirements for TCVN 9311-1: 2012 (ISO 834-1: 1999) fire resistance test and ensure the mechanical properties, good adhesion, dry time, cost. In particular, the solvent-based flame retardant paint film is water-resistant when soaked in water for up to four days without blistering or peeling the paint film.
