1. Definition

Pentaerythritol is an organic compound with the formula C(CH2OH)4. Classified as a polyol, it is a white solid. Pentaerythritol is a raw material for the synthesis and manufacture of explosives, plastics, paints, appliances, cosmetics, and many other commercial products.

The word pentaerythritol is a compound word of Penta related to the number of carbon atoms and erythritol has 4 alcohol groups.

2. Basic knowledge background

Pentaerythritol was first reported in 1891 by the German chemist Bernhard Tollens and his student P. Wigand. The pentaerythritol synthesis equation is shown in Photo 1.

3. The role and mechanism of action in flame retardant paint

Pentaerythritol is used in flame retardant coatings as a charring agent. When ammonium polyphosphate is decomposed into polyphosphoric acid (HPO3)n and NH3 at a temperature greater than 250oC. The polyphosphoric acid then reacts with Pentaerythritol and then dehydrates to form a thick layer of coal that protects the substrate (Figure 2).
